The story behind this piece was a great lesson for me in editing. Just as the publication states, Speculative 66 is a place for micro-fiction with a word count of exactly 66. “Stay of Execution” was originally a 450 word flash piece entered into Escape Pod’s flash contest. The feedback was really good. Turns out this was more of an idea piece and it still holds true after cutting out 384 words. This goes to show that sometimes a story needs to be chopped up to the bare essentials. The challenge was fun, and I’m glad it found a home with the folks at Speculative 66.
Challenge yourself, write stuff you’re not comfortable with. There’s always a lesson to be learned.
